The Daybird Sessions: Ep. 7

Hello, hello!

and I are back this week with another episode of The Daybird Sessions.

This week’s poem/song pairing were both pieces written for our son. Auden was just a few months old when he discovered a fascination with his hands. On a coffee shop patio one afternoon, I watched him as he gazed at them, wiggled his fingers, grasped everything he could and found. I found myself thinking about his openness, his tenderness, the contrast with the social demands of boyhood—my poem, "To my son I say,” came from that moment.

Alex’s song, Sweet Boy, was written shortly before Auden’s first birthday. It’s a gorgeous little ode to the precious littleness of a child at that age, and a promise to be with him as he grows, metamorphoses, becomes.

These are just snapshots—beautiful, brief snapshots—of love, longing, and queer motherhood. Hope you enjoy this episode of The Daybird Sessions.
