"More than once, I have been asked what a folk musician has to offer to scholarship..."
Hi all, it’s been a minute!
Quick catch-up: as you probably know, I’m in grad school. I’m having an amazing time and my writing (and my mind) is being stretched and challenged in such exciting ways. It’s truly been such a gift to be here. I will have lots of writing to share with y’all in coming days, but keeping most of it close to the chest for the moment :) thanks for your patience.
I’m writing this morning because my dearest friend
has just written a gorgeous, gentle, incisive piece on the limitations of the Academy (read: academia) and the power of Folk music to challenge, to expand, to interrogate what the Academy offers (and who the Academy is willing to hear).More than once, I have been asked what a folk musician has to offer to scholarship. Pretty sure this question was rhetorical, but I think it reveals the very limited and exclusionary ways we think about knowledge: who it comes from, and who it is for.
